The Pentagon has prepared options for renewed action against Iran, but Trump says nothing will happen before the November 3 midterms.

Washington has drawn up options for a possible return to large-scale combat with Iran, yet the White House says the timing will not come before voters head to the polls. On October 8, 2026, President Donald Trump stated that no strikes will take place before the U.S. midterm elections on November 3.

The announcement landed on a day crowded with other Middle East developments. Britain and Israel pulled back from a diplomatic confrontation at the last minute, and Israelis gathered in large numbers to mark three years since the October 7, 2023 attacks.

Strike Options Ready, but Not Before the Midterms

According to reports, the Pentagon has told U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) to finalize plans for a potential major bombing campaign against Iran. If it were approved, the targets would reportedly include Iranian nuclear facilities, energy infrastructure and other strategic sites.

Early reporting suggested such strikes could come in the weeks leading up to the U.S. and Israeli elections. Trump addressed that directly on social media, writing that the United States "will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections."

Preparation, however, continues on the ground and at sea. The U.S. is still moving resources into the region, and it is expected to have three aircraft carrier strike groups around Iran by late October. One of them is the USS Theodore Roosevelt.

Talks With Tehran Hit a Wall

The diplomatic track looks no healthier. Channels run through mediators in Qatar and Oman have effectively stopped moving. Trump said he turned down Iran's latest peace proposal, which concerned the reopened Strait of Hormuz, describing it as "not good enough."

Tehran has hardened its own position as well. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared that future diplomacy with the United States is "closed forever," citing what Iran regards as a betrayal. With both capitals signaling little appetite for compromise, the pause before the midterms is not the same as a thaw.

UK and Israel Step Back From a Consulate Showdown

A separate crisis, this one between two close partners, was narrowly avoided on October 8. That was the deadline Israel had set for shutting down Britain's East Jerusalem diplomatic presence, a consulate general with a history stretching back 187 years.

Israel had ordered the closure in response to trade sanctions imposed by British Prime Minister Andy Burnham on goods from illegal West Bank settlements. London, for its part, had reportedly threatened to expel 27 Israeli diplomats if the closure went ahead.

A last-minute compromise, brokered by UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar, defused the standoff. The consulate has removed its signage and stopped operating in its old form. It has been rebranded as the "UK Mission, Jerusalem."

The change comes with a real cost in staffing. The office has lost its consular status, and 20 British diplomats, including the Consul General, are leaving the country. A skeleton crew of seven will stay behind to look after the building and keep basic services available to Palestinians.

Israel Marks Three Years Since October 7

All of this unfolded as Israel observed the third anniversary of the October 7 attacks. Large memorial gatherings took place across the country. In Tel Aviv's Yarkon Park, an estimated 50,000 people attended a national ceremony organized by survivors and bereaved families.

The event honored the victims and renewed the call for the return of the remaining hostages.

The Takeaway

Trump's pledge buys a few weeks, but the military and diplomatic picture around Iran has not softened. Plans are ready, carriers are heading in, and talks are stalled, so the question is what happens after November 3. The UK–Israel deal, meanwhile, shows that even sharp disputes between allies can be settled at the deadline, though the reduced Jerusalem mission shows that it came at a price.
