In brief: India defeated Pakistan by 19 runs in the Asian Games men's T20 final, completing a cricket gold double, while Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh for bronze.

The men's T20 cricket tournament at the 2026 Asian Games ended in high drama at the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan. India came out on top in a final against arch-rivals Pakistan, and in doing so wrapped up a historic gold double for Indian cricket at these Games. The women's team had already won gold earlier in the competition, and the men have now matched them.

It was a day with plenty to talk about, from a frosty start at the toss to a lone-hand knock that almost turned the match around. Here is how both medal matches played out.

A Final Charged Before the First Ball

The tension was obvious well before a ball was bowled. At the toss, the two captains, India's Shreyas Iyer and Pakistan's Sahibzada Farhan, did not go through the traditional pre-match handshake. It is a small gesture in most matches, and its absence set the mood for a contest that already carried heavy expectations.

With a gold medal at stake and these two sides facing each other, the game was always going to be watched closely. India won the toss and chose to bat first.

India Post 211 on the Back of Fast Starts

India's batters made full use of the opportunity. Opener Abhishek Sharma set an aggressive tone, smashing 61 off only 28 balls and hitting seven sixes along the way. His innings gave India the quick start that T20 teams look for, and put the Pakistan bowlers under pressure early.

Pakistan did not let the innings run away from them, though. They pulled things back with a series of quick wickets, and for a while the scoreboard slowed down. The recovery came through a crucial 62-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube.

Varma finished unbeaten on 51 off just 22 balls, and the stand pushed India beyond the 200-run mark. India closed on 211 for 6, a total that gave their bowlers a big cushion to defend.

Hasan Nawaz Keeps Pakistan in the Hunt

Chasing 212 was never going to be easy, and Pakistan's reply leaned heavily on one man. Hasan Nawaz played a spectacular, almost solo innings, scoring 96 off 51 balls. His hitting brought the equation down to 52 runs needed from the final three overs, which meant the contest was still alive deep into the chase.

That was the point where India's bowlers took control. Washington Sundar and Jasprit Bumrah delivered stellar bowling in the death overs and dried up the boundaries Pakistan needed. The required rate climbed with every dot ball, and Pakistan finished on 192 for 6, falling 19 runs short.

For India, the win sealed a gold that came with real pressure attached. For Pakistan, Nawaz's innings was a brave effort, even if it could not carry them over the line.

Sri Lanka Take Bronze Over Bangladesh

Earlier in the day, the bronze medal match produced its own standout performance. Sri Lanka came into it after a heavy semifinal defeat against India, and they bounced back strongly to beat Bangladesh in convincing fashion.

The star was ambidextrous spinner Tharindu Ratnayake. Sri Lanka were in a difficult spot when he came to the crease, and he steadied the innings with a 93-run partnership alongside captain Sahan Arachchige. Ratnayake scored 65 off 32 balls, including five sixes and seven fours, and helped Sri Lanka reach a competitive 165 for 9.

He was just as important with the ball. Ratnayake took two wickets as Sri Lanka's spinners tightened the screws, and Bangladesh were bowled out for 102 in 17.3 overs. The 63-run victory secured bronze for Sri Lanka.

The Takeaway

India leave Japan with both the men's and women's T20 gold medals, a double that gives this edition of the Asian Games a special place in the country's cricket story. Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma set up the win with the bat, and Sundar and Bumrah closed it out in the final overs.

Pakistan can take pride in Hasan Nawaz's fighting 96, and Sri Lanka showed resilience by turning a heavy semifinal loss into a bronze medal. Nepalyst will keep following the results and the stories from the Games.
