Alexander Zverev has added another major title to his growing career, defeating American Ben Shelton in the US Open final on Sunday. The German produced a composed performance to win 6-3, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2 and claim his second Grand Slam championship.
The victory also ended hopes of an American man finally lifting the US Open trophy again. The wait for a homegrown men's champion continues, with Andy Roddick remaining the last American to win the tournament after his victory over Juan Carlos Ferrero in 2003.
Zverev Takes Control Early
The final at Arthur Ashe Stadium brought together two players with plenty of power in their games, particularly on serve. Zverev, however, looked more settled during the opening stages. His steady baseline play and disciplined approach made it difficult for Shelton to find an early rhythm.
Shelton gradually started to settle into the match. The 23-year-old became more aggressive on return and began finding openings with his forehand. His improvement put Zverev under increasing pressure, but the German managed to hold his nerve when the second set reached a tiebreak.
Winning that set gave Zverev a significant advantage. Shelton was now facing the difficult task of coming back from two sets down against a player who had already experienced the pressure of major finals several times before.

Shelton Refuses to Give Up
Despite the two-set deficit, Shelton did not allow the match to slip away without a fight. The young American raised his level in the third set, attacking more confidently and putting Zverev under pressure.
For a while, the momentum appeared to be changing. Shelton's energy was matched by a loud and passionate crowd inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, with many fans hoping to witness an American breakthrough. Zverev looked increasingly uncomfortable as Shelton fought his way back into the contest.
Shelton eventually took the third set 7-5, cutting the deficit to one set and giving the home crowd fresh reason to believe that a dramatic comeback might be possible.
Zverev Holds His Nerve in the Fourth
The German responded strongly in the fourth set. A time violation briefly frustrated Zverev, who protested the decision, but the incident did not affect his concentration for long.
Zverev moved ahead 3-1 and maintained control from there. He eventually broke Shelton's serve to take a 5-2 lead, leaving himself one game away from the championship.
Serving for the match, Zverev stayed composed and closed out the final without giving Shelton another opportunity to extend the contest. After several hours of intense tennis, the German could finally celebrate his second Grand Slam title.
Experience Makes the Difference
The contrast in Grand Slam final experience was significant. Sunday marked Shelton's first appearance in a major championship match. Zverev, meanwhile, had already played in five Grand Slam finals before this year's US Open final.
The German also arrived in New York with confidence after winning the French Open in June. Although he faced some difficult matches early in the tournament, Zverev found his rhythm as the competition progressed and reached the final without dropping a set after the second round.
Shelton's route to the final was considerably more demanding. In the quarterfinals, he spent four hours and 28 minutes battling Carlos Alcaraz for a place in the last four. The exhausting encounter finished in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Shelton's Breakthrough Run
Although the final did not end the way Shelton and his supporters hoped, his run through the tournament was still a major step forward in his career.
After overcoming Alcaraz, Shelton returned to the court against fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals. He won that match 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 to reach the first Grand Slam final of his career.
His performances throughout the tournament also gave American tennis fans plenty of reason for optimism. Shelton's powerful serve, aggressive forehand and energetic style have made him one of the most exciting young players on the men's tour.
A Special Moment for American Tennis
Support for Shelton was especially strong inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. Fans had traveled from different parts of the country hoping to see the 23-year-old make history on one of tennis's biggest stages.
There was also a deeper significance to Shelton's appearance. He became the first Black man to reach the US Open men's singles final since Arthur Ashe, the tournament's namesake, competed at that stage more than five decades ago.
For many spectators, Shelton's run represented more than simply a chance to win a tennis tournament. His presence in the final offered a moment of inspiration for younger players and added another important chapter to the history of American tennis.
Zverev Opens a New Chapter
Alexander Zverev leaves New York with another major championship and further proof that he belongs among the leading players of his generation. His ability to regain control after losing the third set was one of the defining moments of the final.
For Shelton, the disappointment of falling short is likely to be tempered by what he accomplished during the tournament. Reaching his first Grand Slam final, defeating top-level opposition and playing in front of an electric New York crowd represent significant milestones in his young career.
The US Open may not have produced the American men's champion many fans were waiting for, but Shelton's breakthrough suggests that the country's next generation is beginning to make its presence felt. For Zverev, meanwhile, the trophy adds another major achievement to his résumé and could prove to be an important moment in the next phase of his career.
